NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Vancouver photographer Judy D. Shane in Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography. Agora Gallery opens its doors for public viewing of this exhibition on April 26th with a reception on Thursday April 28th, from 6pm to 8pm. Admission is free.
Judy D. Shane's multi-layered photography explores the making of the visual: why and how we see what we see. Her photographic composites of individually sculpted paint strokes are captured with a macro lens, allowing every detailed groove and pearlescent gleam on the surface of the paint to be revealed. Her photography is as crisp and efficient as her paint is luxurious and tactile. She lays the paint in varying shapes and thicknesses, seeking a three-dimensional realism and compositional order that incite queries into color, light, and figure/ground relationships.
By photographing paint this way, Shane transforms what should be merely the building block of a picture into a fully realized image in its own right. She reveals to her audience the details that are never seen with the naked eye, and asks us to think beyond the conventional separation of photography and the traditional art of painting.
Shane lives and keeps a studio in Vancouver, Canada. Her work is informed by her fifteen years as a respected visual effects compositor for film and television.

About the Exhibition
Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography
With both an international and a technical scope, Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography is a premier survey of the state of modern photography. The exhibition casts a wide net to find the artists creating the most visually innovative work. There are landscape photographers who transform the terrain into a living, brightly colored being by testing the limits of digital cameras. There are detail photographers who work within contemporary languages – including genres as varied as minimalism, expressionism, and pop – to bring a new kind of photographic work to light. And there are portraitistsScience Articles, who dive deep into their subjects to present psychological studies as well. Innovators and purists alike will find new aesthetic ideas to wrestle with in the collection. These are all artists working with traditional subjects to create modern views of the world around them.
